WJC Today - Opening Day


Opening day of the 2012 World Junior Championships is now over. Here are some quick summaries of each game.

Canada 8, Finland 1: Summary
The biggest game of the night was the first one as Canada beat Finland 8-1 lead by Mark Stone with a hat trick and Jonathan Huberdeau with one goal and 4 assists. Mark Visentin got the victory. Stone was also named Player of the Game for Canada and Alexander Ruuttu was Player of the Game for Finland.

Sweden 9, Latvia 4: Summary
In the second game of the night, Sweden handed Latvia a 9-4 beating at the Saddledome in Calgary. Max Friberg had 4 goals for Sweden.  Filip Forsberg picked up Player of the Game honors for Sweden while Nikita Jevpalovs took home the award for Latvia.

USA 11, Denmark 3: Summary
The third game of the day was saw USA beat Denmark 11-4. Saint John Sea Dogs forward Charlie Coyle had a hat trick for the US. Coyle was also awarded Player of The Game for the US and Mathias Bau-Hansen was Denmark`s Player of the Game.

Russia 3, Switzerland 0: Summary
The fourth and final game of the day was the only low scoring game as Russsia shutout Switzerland 3-0. Quebec Remparts import forward Mikhail Grigorenko had a goal and an assist for Russia. Goaltender Andrei Vasilevski was named Russia`s Player of the Game and Swiss Goaltender Tim Wolf was Switzerland's Player of the Game.

T2 - M. Friberg(SWE) 4pts
T2 - J. Zucker(USA) 4pts
Five players are tied for 5th place with 3pts, including Canada's Mark Stone and Saint John Sea Dogs forward Charlie Coyle of USA.
